SignWriting Report
January 9, 1999

Wow...such a wonderful week filled with messages discussing Chinese and
SignWriting and many other things! It was hard to keep up with all of the
messages! I really enjoyed reading them :-)

I have three things to tell you:

1. Our Annual SignWriting Membership Meeting will be held on February 7,
1999 in my home in La Jolla. Anyone who has paid their membership dues is
welcome to attend. Members pay $15.00 annually, and receive half price on
all publications, plus they are a part of our organization and can vote at
the meeting, or they can send in a proxy. I will be mailing the proxies and
invitations out to SW members soon.

2. SignWriter 5.0
Larry Peranich, our computer programmer, and I, just had a meeting an hour
ago. We are making some progress on SignWriter 5.0, and we are now
designing a way to type down the page in vertical columns, along with many
other important things that makes SignWriter 5.0 quite different than
SignWriter 4.3. More on that next week.

3. Writing Spanish Sign Language in SignWriting
In an hour, I will be picking guests up at the airport. Steve and Dianne
Parkhurst are American linguists who live in Madrid, Spain. They have been
studying Spanish Sign Language, and are skilled in SignWriting. They have
used the SignWriter Computer Program for years, and it is because of their
work, and also the work of another linguist named Irma Maria Munoz Baell in
Alicante, that I developed the Spanish version of our computer program. The
three of them told me the new handshapes that were needed, and I tricked
the old MS-DOS program to accept more symbols than it was meant to hold!
This was back in 1995.

Steve and Dianne Parkhurst, and Irma Maria, have presented workshops on
SignWriting in Spain, and recently they have been working on a new book
teaching SignWriting in Spanish and Spanish Sign Language. The book is not
ready yet, but when it is published of course we will announce it to the
SignWriting List. Steve and Dianne are visiting me to share this document
with me. I feel very honored and excited about this, and I look forward to
sharing with them. I have not seen them in years, so I am really looking
forward to their visit! And they have a new baby boy, only a few months old
:-)

To read more about SignWriting in Spain, we do have some information on the
web:

Sooo...you may not hear much from me until Wednesday of next week, because
I will be focusing on writing Spanish Sign Language, but I look forward to
reading all of your messages then!!

All my best wishes -

Valerie :-)
