International
Institute
for Deaf Services (IIDS)
invites
Cherie Wren to present a SignWriting Workshop
by Paul William Ellis
The International Institute for Deaf
Services has invited Cherie Wren to present
Cat in the Hat, and to also teach a SignWriting
workshop on March 27-28, 2009 in Birmingham,
Alabama, in celebration of Deaf Literacy and
Legacy.
Cherie is an interpreter and instructor at the
Georgia School for the Deaf and has contributed
a variety of children’s stories to the
SignWriting Literature Project. Cherie's interest
in SignWriting began around 2003, as a more
complete way to make notes than the very incomplete
system called 'gloss.' Once she started to learn
the system, Cherie became more and more convinced
that this could be a major component in improving
literacy for Deaf children, as well as a way
to preserve the legacy of Deaf Culture and literature.
On Friday, March 27, 2009, Cherie will present
“Cat in the Hat in American Sign Language”;
you will not want to miss this. On Saturday,
March 28, 2009, Cherie will present a workshop
on “SignWriting: A Bridge to Literacy.”

About
IIDS
IIDS is one of the channels for fulfilling the
great commission of God by reaching the deaf
and hearing communities in an educational setting,
raising up bold leaders and teachers and sending
out anointed laborers, the deaf will come to
know Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior
in the Age of Technology.
It is the mission of IIDS to train leaders and
educators both deaf and hearing, interpreters
and workers with the deaf to evangelize, obtain
skill development in American Sign Language
and Deaf Culture, technology and religious training.
Leaders, educators, sign language interpreters,
workers/teachers of deaf children and adults
around the country will make a dynamic impact
on society.
The
ministry is incorporated and approved by the
Internal Revenue Service as a nonprofit charity(5013c).IIDS
was founded by Paul William Ellis and incorporated
on February 16, 1994.
As it relates to the Celebration of Deaf Literacy
and Legacy, as taken from our flyer, the purpose
is to reach out to our diverse community, increasing
their awareness of the rich history of the deaf
and of the various library resources that will
benefit the public - deaf and hearing. By observing
National Deaf History Month, offer an occasion
to celebrate the legacy and many contributions
made by people who share the personal, familial
or societal deaf experience, as well as instill
in our young deaf/hard of hearing students their
own legacy and their self worth.
My personal desire to have IIDS be involved
in this endeavor flourished from my work within
the community and seeing as time passes that
there is such a lack of accessible and available
resources promoting literacy within the deaf
community and the legacy of those who paved
the way has been long forgotten or ignored.
My hope is that the deaf community will move
forward in equality, remembering to reach back
and grab their own.
I do believe that literacy is crucial to understanding
the Word of God. It is my desire that deaf children
as well as adults will develop a passion for
reading and the Holy Bible will be at the top
of the list for their Book of the Month club.
