Joe, I understand what you mean but I believe that color coding is good for young children to learn because most young children always contraction < -- (Is that spelling right?) on colorful coding. Keep it! I'm suspicioning, though, that for fast reading, by people who know the signs well, the colors are harder to read, as they require more mental processing, and thus are slower.
