I have posted, on our SW web site, two screen designs that show a little bit of the designs I am working on...please know I am still working on them. These designs show what the pull-down menus may possibly look like with icons, and also what they look like if you choose Menus with Words. I am still developing the icons, so you will notice that some of the icons are missing :-) Menus in Icons https://www.SignWriting.org/soft004.html Menus in Words https://www.SignWriting.org/soft005.html Notice how the pull-down menus under the heading "Menus" gives a variety of choices to the user. These choices only change how the Menus are read. They do not determine how a person types. When the program opens, a blinking cursor appears in an empty document, waiting for you to type. Typing is determined by going under the headings "Signs", "Fingerspelling" or "Words" and choosing your mode of typing. If someone does not go under one of those headings, and simply starts typing, the default is typing "Signs". This is the same as it is right now in SW 4.3. The default is typing Signs, unless you choose to go under Fingerspelling or Words and change keyboards. Most people type signs. Fingerspelling and the roman alphabet are not used as much. And the sign keyboard is completely international. All of you have been very supportive and I know you want flexibility. - We are lucky, because Java is a flexible programming language, which is great for SignWriting. So I am always open to your suggestions. And oh yes - notice when I list countries in words -that I am listing the name of the country, and then the language from that country. For example, look at Spain. It is listed as Spain-Madrid, because we are writing the Madrid dialect of Spanish and Spanish Sign Language. Spain has a lot of dialects. Catalonian Sign Language, for example, is different - at least I believe that is true. We have some small interest from a Deaf group there, so there may be a day when SignWriting is used for two different signed languages in Spain. If that is the case, then we would list Spain-Madrid and Spain-Catalan. With the international flags, we will have to develop a way to show those dialects with icons, which is going to be a little complex...any suggestions on that score? Maybe they have territorial flags for Catalan?
