Hi Valerie and list, I know that in Norway we reccon that about 5000 people (out of a total population of 4.4 mill) are using sign language as their family language. Of these, about 3000 are deaf, most of the rest are their children or spouses. As for other people who use sign language on a daily basis, like teachers of the deaf etc., we should be able to get statistics now, but I do not think anyone has done that work. And then there are quite a few, our princess among them, who know a smattering of sign language. In addition, sign followed by speech is widely (that should account for at least some hundred) used to communicate with people, especially children, who have language learning difficulties. All my best, Ingvild > > How many people in the world (both Deaf and hearing) use a signed language? > Does anyone know the current statistics? > > I am writing a report to a foundation, and I need the statistic for the > report.... > > A long time ago I read that approximately 2% of the world's population uses > a signed language, but I wonder if that is true? > > Thanks in advance for your help - > > Valerie :-) > > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > > Valerie Sutton > > > SignWriting Web Site > https://www.SignWriting.org > > Post messages to the SignWriting List > > > SignWriting List Archives > https://www.egroups.com/group/sw-l > > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > > The DAC > Deaf Action Committee for SignWriting > Center For Sutton Movement Writing > an educational nonprofit organization > PO.
