June 15, 1998 Dear SW List Members: This is a report about the SignWriting Literacy Project. We have six groups involved. The Deaf children will start learning SignWriting in the fall. The teachers will be learning SignWriting themselves this summer. The first package I am sending the project participants consists of... 1. Lessons in SW Video Series & booklets 2. Lessons In SW textbook (as a reference for the teachers) Once everyone receives this box, I will post specific lessons on the web for the teachers, relating to these materials. The textbook is like a big reference book that the whole school can refer to, like a thick encyclopedia if there is a technical question about some symbol - it is not designed for children but it is more for teachers and librarians. Tomorrow, my Deaf co-workers and I are going to a "TV & Video Production Studio" to videotape "ASL Literature", including... 1. Goldilocks 2. Humpty Dumpty 3. Cindrella 4. Snow White 5. Sleeping Beauty 6. A Poem called "One Harbor" Once this footage is shot on videotape, I can then go into the editing room and create "lessons on video" relating to the written materials we plan to send the schools later this summer. It is an exciting project and I know the video backup of the literature will be helpful to the teachers. When they read a symbol in our books that they do not understand, they can view the video to see what we were writing! We are also thinking of using the footage for other educational videos as well - designed specifically for children. So this will be fun and we are all eager to get going on this new video!! Another new development - I will be creating "Coloring Book" versions of the literature for children, which I think will be a welcome addition to the materials. Have a wonderful day!
