June 24, 1998 Good Evening SW List Members - I hope you all are doing well... I have been "snowed under" a pile of papers this week, and actually I still am, but I decided it was time for me to say "hello" anyway! As you know, the SignWriting List is an international list...we have members from all over the world. Those of you in Australia, Brazil, Chile and other countries "down south" ...I know you are experiencing winter right now... but here in San Diego (grin)...we have summer...and I only wish I could share with you the beautiful summer evening we are having at this moment- it is peaceful and calm - absolutely breathtaking. I am writing to welcome the new members to our list! We have several new members. For those of you who have just joined...we are always interested in hearing from you. Back when the SW List first began, Ben Karlin asked us all to introduce ourselves. At first we all felt pretty shy, but after one or two introductions it became fun! It was great getting to know each other, so please feel free to tell us a little about yourselves and why you are interested in SignWriting :-) Meanwhile, because it is summer here, several people are traveling, and some have temporarily signed off the list. You can do this yourself, and then sign yourself back on again anytime. There are instructions on how to do this...if you would like that information, please write to me personally and I will be happy to send the information to you. The LISTSERVE software that manages this list has a list of "commands" and once you get to know those commands, it is easy to become independent. Let me tell you about one of our list members...Mark Penner, who is an American who lives in Japan. Mark has been using SignWriting to record Japanese Sign Language, and awhile back Mark ordered the Lessons In SW textbook, the videotapes, and the software. He has a group doing translations from the Bible into Japanese Sign Language and he is hoping to write some of it in SignWriting. But like all of us, they are terribly busy in his office, and they have not had time to learn the system on their own. This afternoon I was working on the booklet that will accompany our new "History of SW" video, and the voice phone rings. Who was on the phone? Mark Penner of course! So...since Mark is traveling...he has temporarily signed off the SignWriting List...and when he returns to Japan he will sign on again. Meanwhile...Mark will be coming to San Diego on July 24th to study with me - we will be writing some Japanese Sign Language together, and then I will post it on our SignWriting Web Site for you all to enjoy :-) And I just received a story written in Nicaraguan Sign Language, which I will also post soon...and...I am preparing lessons for the teachers in the SignWriting Literacy Project...and...I have received attached files or files on disk from several of you - thank you!! I hope to be writing to you personally soon - Thanks so much for your continued interest - and once again - welcome new members!
