Dear List Members: The message below was "stuck in transition", when we changed from the old "SignWriting Email List" to the new SW-L. Here is the message from Harry Blackmore: ________________________________________________ X-Sender: Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 15:17:34 +0800 To: SignWriting List From: Harry Blackmore Subject: New Zealand Sign Language Mime-Version: 1.0 I have a copy of the new Sign Language dictionary, published by the Auckland University Press last year, and I must say I was very impressed by its quality, both of production and of its content. There are many similarities to the Australian dictionary of AUSLAN which Dr Trevor Johnston produced ten years ago, and the scope is much the same. As with the Australian dictionary, I am sure the sister dictionary from New Zealand will also have a great influence for good among those who wish to learn the sign language of the local deaf community and, thereby, learn something of the nature of the culture of the deaf people in New Zealand. We are still waiting, in Australia, for the second edition of the AUSLAN dictionary entitled "Signs of Australia". Its CD-ROM version in PC format came out in December last and is very impressive. We are expecting the printed form and the Mac CD-ROM version in August. The many students who are engaged this year in deafness studies in Australia are anxiously waiting to get their hands on this dictionary, because the previous edition has been out of print for some time, and second-hand copies are rarely available. I look forward to the news items relating to SignWriting with great interest, although at present heavily committed elsewhere.
