Hello Everyone on the SignWriting List!
Hope you all are enjoying your September...I am sure it is a very busy one
for teachers :-)
Our SignWriting materials are being used by both fourth and second graders
at Texas School for the Deaf. Recently I was asked to develop materials for
the second graders...so I have been trying to think of ways to make our
materials easier. We already have a coloring and workbook, so I wasn't sure
what to do.
Then I remembered that Diana Smith, at the Caldwell Elementary School in
Kansas, had suggested flashcards for the kids. What a great idea! So...I
have developed some basic flashcards, with a sign or symbol on one side,
and on the flip side a picture.
For example, on one side I have a picture of a house in color, and on the
back I have the ASL sign for house written in SignWriting. Other cards have
one SignWriting symbol on one side, and the ASL sign that symbol is used
in, on the other side.
If you are a teacher in our SW Literacy Project, and would like these
flashcards, I will be happy to send them to you. I can make more cards, but
first I would like your feedback.
So please write to me if you would like to experiment with the flashcards -
I look forward to hearing from you :-)
Valerie :-)
