SignWriting List June 17, 2000 Dear SignWriting List Members: Occasionally people ask me if SignWriting is useful for the mentally disabled, and in the past, because we had no experience, I would say "I don't know". A couple of days ago, I received this message from a teacher of the mentally disabled: "I have a mantally disbled, profoundly deaf student that can read a few (very few) English written words. One of our interpreters uses Sign Writing a lot and "tried" this with the above student. She could "read" with very little instructions and could answer questions when it was presented in sign writing. I would love to receive more information about products that we could order to use with the other students too. Thanks so much !!" This is the first message I can remember about SignWriting being taught to the mentally disabled. So I hope the teacher can share more with us later.... Meanwhile, many thanks for sharing this with us - -- Val ;-) ----------------------------- Valerie Sutton SignWritingSite: https://www.SignWriting.org To Post A Message To The SW List: SignWriting List Archives: https://www.egroups.com/group/sw-l |
