thank you very much for your message. Sounds great and I feel very excited to read about computer issues I haven´t got any idea about but I do realize that this will affect our ability to spread SW. And in addition to that - I know that your guests are heard and soul for SW and that must be very nourishing for all of you to meet each other personally. I feel a little bit jealous in a positive way ... It is 2 o´clock at night. I´m still busy. Two hours ago two very good Deaf friends of mine left my house. We spent three hours to make a video. They were so kind to sign for me the whole "Goldikocks and the Three Bears " -series -- level one to four. Huuuu that was great . I translated the ASL -version and afterwards Anke signed it in wonderfull DGS. Her friend paid attention and was a great help. We discussed each passage - what about the locations - where has been the house of the bears - where has been the house of Goldilocks - what direction did she follow n order to get to the house of the bears .. We ended up with reading the whole "Learn to Read : American Sign Language" in SignWriting book - after we had seen the video with Darline Clark Gunsauls. I am so happy that I bought the whole package ;-))))))))) Have a look at the attchment - both of them studying the materials - signing "ready" at this moment - They are really wonderfull people - and I bet you will hear from them ... ;-) Just want to let you and all the listmembers know that this way of teaching is excellent. My guests - with basic knowledge in SW - haven´t had any difficulities to follow the SW-descriptions of the booklet. And they were excitet In fact we have had lots of fun when we realized that we are able to analyze the SW-spelling so acurately that we wonder if there is the one or other problem - You have had to solve a difficult problem to switch from receptive view to expressive view and altogether from left-handed signer to right-handed signer ! Congratulations on that. The Video -work has been lots of fun and you will find some pictures on my new homepage " www.gebaerdenschrift.de the next week ! As you know - there is a project going on in Switzerland to transcribe the Goldilocks - version - so I decided to do the same for Germany. It will be fun to compare the different versions in the world. Anke is a native signer and very very skilled in DGS. In fact - she is my DGS - teacher - and I feel very gratefull that she spends so much time to support the progress of GebaerdenSchrift in Germany. All the best to you and a Happy New Year to all of You Thanks a lot for your attention and keep the spirits high. SW is wonderfull and in time many people will realize that - Stefan ;-) ----- Original Message ----- From: Valerie Sutton To: Sent: Friday, December 29, 2000 8:11 PM Subject: SignWriting Programming In Brazil ;-> SignWriting List December 29, 2000 Dear SignWriting List Members! I look forward to reading your recent messages! In the past few days I have not been online....Instead I have been totally emersed in fascinating conversations about computer programming with my Brazilian guests, Antonio Carlos da Rocha Costa and his beautiful wife Graçaliz, from Pelotas in sourthern Brazil. They just left my home a few hours ago, driving north to Los Angeles to take the long flight back to Brazil. We live on the other side of the world from each other...I feel so fortunate that they came to visit me all the way to southern California!! And I have much to share with all of you. I learned about different computer programs being developed in Brazil to type SignWriting...There are several impressive programming projects in Brazil...each one unique and serving different purposes. I also learned about computer languages. As you know, computers are run by software, and software is developed by computer programmers using special "programming languages". Some well-known programming languages are Basic, Pascal, Think-C, Java, and of course HTML, which is used to create web sites.... And there are many more programming languages too...in fact there is a long list! The programming languages that end in "ML"...like HTML, or XML, or VML ....the "ML" means "Markup Language", and it is used to develop new kinds of programs on the web. HTML means "HyperText Markup Language" XML means "Extensible Markup Language" VML means "Vector Markup Language"...which provides XML-based graphics for the web... So Antonio Carlos is developing a new ML called "SWML", for "SignWriting Markup Language", which will someday be used to type email in SignWriting on the web....called "SignWriting Web Mail"....isn't that exciting? Someday, we won't have to attach GIF files, because we will be able to type email messages directly in SignWriting. And there are more aspects to Antonio Carlos' and Grazaliz's work with SignWriting programming. Their work is multi-faceted. Much of this will be posted on the web in time with detailed explanations....The work may lead to other new developments in computer programming...For example, SWML and Unicode will someday be intertwined to make typing directly in SignWriting a reality on computers with or without the SignWriter Computer Program. So right now, web designers using SignWriting...like Stefan, Jerry, myself and others...we all make GIFs or JPEGs. It takes a long time to do a web page in SignWriting right now because of that. But SignWriting web design in the future will be like typing English or German words into a web page. Thanks to SWML...it will speed up SW web design work quite a bit! I feel so grateful to Antonio Carlos and Grazaliz, that they have chosen to do this time-consuming, long-term work. It is a blessing that will in time affect all SignWriting users... So we have much to be thankful for! The year 2001 looks very bright indeed ;-) I look forward to chatting online soon - My very best wishes to everyone! -- Val ;-> ----------------------------- Valerie Sutton SignWritingSite: https://www.SignWriting.org SignWriting List Archives: https://www.egroups.com/group/sw-l To post a message to the SW List: To manage your SW List email: for No Mail: SET SW-L NOMAIL for Digest Mail: SET SW-L DIGEST for Regular Mail: SET SW-L MAIL for Member List: REVIEW SW-L by NAME to Leave SW List: SIGNOFF SW-L to Join SW List: SUB SW-L firstname lastname | ||||||||||||||||
