Besides being a writing system for use in written communication and
education, SignWriting provides a computer readable form of signed
languages. What is even more interesting is that by being iconographic
(pictorial), SignWriter is in accordance with the visual-spatial modality
of sign languages. At the same time, SignWriter shares with
other transcription systems a structured representation of the sign, i.e.
a sign is the combination of ("phonological" or "phonetic"- a metaphor
from spoken language linguistics) features.
I learned about SignWriting when I have been searching on how
computational resources for the GrSL could be developed. Now I am
questioning over the suitability of the SW for sign NLP applications,
perhaps with a cognitive view.
