A Special Thank You to James Shepard-Kegl....
As you all know, James has accomplished some remarkable things. He
has dedicated his life to establishing two schools for the Deaf in
Nicaragua. One of them is in Bluefields, a poverty-worn city that
left their Deaf children without education...
That is...until James and Judy Shepard-Kegl decided to make a difference...
And part of the accomplishment involves SignWriting. James has
translated literature, with the help of his Deaf students, from
English into Nicaraguan Sign Language, and produced reading books in
SignWriting for his schools' curriculum. The Nicaraguan Deaf students
are reading SignWriting fluently, and for many of them, this is their
only chance for literacy.
This week I received a special gift from James!
A gorgeous spiral-bound book, totally written in SignWriting...there
is not one spoken language word in the entire book (except for the
dedication/copyright page)....
The book includes 19 stories written in SignWriting...a thick volume
of Sign Language Literature...
THANK YOU, JAMES!! ;-)
I will treasure your gift always....
