My humble opinion, yes ASL should become eventually a major at colleges
and universities. Sign Writing can help make that a reality as then one
has a way of chronicling in more than videotape the history of Deaf in
this country and cultural milestones (such as the election of the first
Deaf President of Gallaudet College/University, brought about BY the
Deaf). There is certainly enough history for a major, enough science
for a major (cognition, linguistics), enough art for a major (deaf
theatre), and enough people skills for a major (cultural anthropology).
