June 10, 2001 Regarding the "Portuguese A" handshape.... I have never seen that handshape in American Sign Language... although it may exist. I feel so fortunate, because the Lessons In SignWriting Textbook is now being translated in several different countries. Other countries are developing their own SignWriting books and materials ;-) But back in 1995, when the Lessons In SignWriting Textbook was published, there were not that many SW books in other countries. So I chose to list all the handshapes that we were using at that time..whether they were used in ASL or not. So since you are writing ASL, you can ignore the "Portuguese A" in the book (on page 36 in Chapter 3). But at least it is there for Portugal if they need it ;-) For those who are curious about that symbol, here are other handshapes that are similar. Notice that the line in the middle of the square represents the middle finger projecting straight up: | |||||
