Good Morning Michele and everyone on the SignWriting List -
I am so pleased to receive your second report Michele, thank you! I will be
posting your report to the List and on our web site in the next day or so.
For the benefit of the new list members, there are five groups
participating in our Fall 98 SignWriting Literacy Project, and Michele's
homeschool is one of them. We donated SW books and videos to the groups, in
return for their documented feedback, so Michele sent me the second report
today. The feedback is terrific and really needed.
You see, I have been writing reports all week too...Our educational
nonprofit has to write the grants to receive the funding to sponsor the
Literacy Project. The Fall 98 semester was funded by a small private
foundation here in San Diego, the Legler Benbough Foundation. They required
a report from me and I just sent it to them yesterday - I requested a
renewal of funding too - let us cross our fingers :-)
Michele -I am real excited about your children learning signs in "units"
rather than in pieces. That backs up exactly what Karen van Hoek and others
were saying about iconicity - that "units" are an important element when
reading signs - that is the very reason why we started stacking signs - we
see signs as a whole rather than breaking them down.
I am preparing our new Grammar lesson for the web right now. Web
preparation is very mesmerizing for me - Grammar Lesson 2 is a little
complicated and I am trying to find ways to explain it without overwhelming
newcomers. But the whole issue of "units" and "stacking" are the focus of
the lesson - so all this ties together!
I hope to post the new lesson in the next 12 hours - and when I do, I will
announce it -
Then I will get back to answering your specific questions and comments -
Thanks once again for the report -
Have a great Sunday!
Valerie :-)
