Back in the 1980's, we placed the hands to the side of the face more, because in those days we were writing from left to right. But signs are now written relating to the center of the body. When there is a facial expression or facial contact in the sign, it becomes obvious that we are centralizing signs around the face and center of the body...like it looks in real life...and not placed to the side, as in the old days. There are always a few signs that are hard to write because they go directly "through the facial circle"...so those rare signs require the hands to be placed to the side of the face only because they cannot be read otherwise...but those are the exceptions. In the case of "cockroach", bringing the hands and arms back to the center of the body is possible, although the hands are not placed directly "on top of the facial circle", as happens in real life....smile...no writing is perfect, I guess! -- Val ;-> ----------------------------- Valerie Sutton SignWritingSite: https://www.SignWriting.org SignWriting List Archives: https://groups.yahoo.com/group/sw-l/ To post a message to the SW List: |
