Many times they know the signs but don't know the words or don't remember what they mean, SignWriting could help them, reinforce the learning or make it mor understandable. It would also enable them to review things on their own without having to ask for the signs of words they aren't sure of or don't remember. > > > > > > 2. What have been some of your past frustrations when teaching? > > Many times while teaching vocabulary and language they forget so quickly what the word was or what it means, or they learned the word in one context but don't recognize it in another context, it's like a new word to them. > > > > > > 3. Are you hoping that SignWriting might help? If so, in what way? > > With SignWriting they could visualize the word and remember what it is. Also since the deaf learn visually, it's another way to help them to remember. Also as we help the deaf community to define the Bolivian Sign Language it would be a means of helping to record the signs more clearly. > > > > > > 4. As I explain some of the symbols (the few that I have learned and understood so far) they begin to pick out signs they can read and recognize and are excited. I tell them that we can learn to do this too, and they agree. My students range from 13 to 19 and most are in 4th and 5th grade, but I have two students in 9th grade. Our school at present has 54 students from 5 years old to 19yrs., Kinder through 9th grade this year, although we have had several graduates in previous years. Most of our children come at 8, 9 or 10 years of age, and have lost some crucial learning stages. This year most of our new students are between 6 and 8 yrs, with only 4 older students new to our school but have studied elsewhere before. This is a great improvement. Our children come from all over Bolivia and live in the dorms here during the school year. Along with our regular students we have a number who also have a varing level of lack of mental capacity, and have special clases in the basics and vocational training. The deaf can also learn carpintry, welding, construction, jam making and sewing. > > > > > > 6.
