SignWriting List August 24, 2001 Yes, that is correct. The dictionary feature in SignWriter 4.4 can only show one sign language at a time. But with SignBank 2.0, you will be able to view many signed languages side by side. The SignWriter 4.4 dictionary cannot sort by Sign-Symbol-Sequence (SSS). But SignBank 2.0 can. And SignBank 2.0 is in Windows and the Macintosh, with the potential of being cross-platform with Linux and Unix. So it is a modern program, which is sorely needed. However, SignBank 2.0 is not perfect either. Nothing is. What are the issues with SignBank 2.0? Here are two: 1. SignBank 2.0 uses GIFs or JPEGs to store each sign. So the signs have to be typed with SignWriter 4.4 first, and then later transferred to SignBank 2.0 as GIFs. Although there are solutions to this problem, they have not been implemented yet. So data entry at the moment is dependent on how fast you can make GIFs from the SW 4.4 dictionary entries! 2.SignBank 2.0, in beta release, is a database program without any data... Dictionaries have to be constructed from scratch...from the beginning. At the moment I have 125 ASL signs entered, which I am using for testing purposes only... What we have accomplished is the actual software...but it is like an empty shell...waiting to receive signs... In the long run, I believe SignBank 2.0 will offer the world an excellent database. I hope it will contribute to increased understanding between researchers and signers in different countries. -- Val ;-> ----------------------------- Valerie Sutton SignWritingSite: https://www.SignWriting.org SignWriting List Archives: https://groups.yahoo.com/group/sw-l/ To post a message to the SW List: |
