Here's some information that Dan sent to me. -- -Angus B. Grieve-Smith Subject: Re: Arabian Sign Language (fwd) > Is there any published research on the signed languages of the Arabic > Nations? "Research" may be too strong a term. I have read three MA theses on Jordanian Sign Language (LIU for "lughatu l-ishaarati l-urduniyya"), as well as two Joy-of-Signing style guides to the language. I've also seen Palestinian, Iraqi, Syrian, and Saudi signers which indicate to me that the SLs of the Levant and the Gulf are related, although at this stage, I'm unwiling to commit myself to any kind of language/dialect distinction; I'm not even sure if the similarities are due to "genetics," areal contact, or some mixture of the two. At any rate, I hope to have a sketch grammar of LIU online by year's end. Additionally, I have two more popular guides to sign languages, one on Libyan SL, and another on the SL used in Tunisia (LST); both of these clearly bear the stamp of LSF in their lexica. Cheers, Dan. |
