QUESTION: Will the new SignBank 2.0 database support Linux?

ANSWER: Yes. SignBank 2.0 is a specially-designed database in
FileMaker 5.0 or later. The new FileMaker 5.5 does support Linux.
Here is information about FileMaker 5.5:

Platforms and Technologies Supported

FileMaker supports multiple platforms, including the Web, Windows,
Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, Linux, Windows 2000 Terminal Services and Citrix
MetaFrame (certification planned for summer of 2001),Palm, iMode
(planned for late 2001, in Japan), and - planned for first half of
2002 -Pocket PC. In fact, two-thirds of FileMaker's 20,000 developers
are Windows developers, making it second only to Microsoft's Access
database. FileMaker has become the workgroup database of choice
within large organizations. More than 65% of the 1.2 million units of
FileMaker shipped in 2000-2001 were part of volume license sales.

FileMaker's new IT-oriented features include record level security ,
2-way dynamic ODBC* to connect to enterprise systems, a "no new
database" install option and an analyzer tool (the last is in FM
Developer 5.5).

The new controls and ODBC integration along with FileMaker's ease of
use at the end user level allows IT staff to focus on more strategic
issues while providing knowledge workers with more power to manage,
share information, and solve their information-management problems.

Integrate with your business applications

* Work with Microsoft Office. Import data from Microsoft
Excel- including named ranges within spreadsheets, use Excel's
graphing tools to chart FileMaker Pro 5.5 data, mail merge in
Microsoft Word with FileMaker Pro 5.5 records, display and edit Word
documents within FileMaker Pro 5.5 records, and even create large
emailings to Microsoft Outlook (Windows) or Microsoft Entourage (Mac)
directly from FileMaker Pro.

* Integrate with enterprise data. Create calculation-based SQL
queries to ODBC* data sources (e.g. Microsoft SQL Server**, Oracle)
and update ODBC data sources with the Execute SQL script step. Access
FileMaker Pro data from ODBC compliant applications, or use the
FileMaker Pro 5.5 simple query tool to bring in data from ODBC
compliant sources.

Be productive in just minutes

* Convert your Microsoft Excel files. Drag and drop Microsoft
Excel files onto FileMaker Pro 5.5 to instantly create functional
databases ready to publish to other FileMaker Pro users or on your
intranet.

* Access data from multiple sources. Connect with ODBC* or
import/export files from other standard file formats (e.g. Text,
Lotus, CSV, DBF, DIF, SYLK).

* Use templates to get started quickly. Built-in business
templates are included to get you running quickly.

* Develop sophisticated solutions with ease. Start from a
template and use simple dialogs to create the solution you need. Use
the built-in Layout/Report Assistant to quickly and easily create
useful reports and summaries.

*ODBC import, toolbars, the Send Mail script step with mail.app, and
FileMaker Mobile are currently not supported under Mac OS X. Check
www.filemaker.com/support for updates.

**Microsoft SQL Server Driver not available for Mac OS 8.6-9.1 users
