SignWriting Report October 20, 2001 Dear SignWriting List Members! Thank you for your great messages, and for the posters and SignWriting written by the children... I have really missed chatting with all of you! For the past 8 days I have been concentrating on completing the beta test version of SignBank 2.0. It is a lot of fun to develop new products, but this particular job required true concentration without any distractions... such time is hard to find for anyone...and so I finally had to put all other jobs aside to finish the task... I categorized and entered thousands of SignWriting symbols into the database. I did this work by propping my elbows on pillows (for less strain on my wrists). I programmed my mouse to use different buttons for repetitive keystrokes. I entered symbols around 8 hours a day...happily I avoided any wrist problems. To do this data entry, I developed a "rhythmic flow" while entering the symbols...almost like a dance...I had an established routine for entering ....that got faster and faster if I was not interrupted. But if, for example, the telephone rang and I was interrupted briefly, it would take me about a half hour to get back into the rhythmic flow again...I now know how it feels to do data entry...not an easy task if done over a long period of time. Antonio Carlos da Rocha Costa blessed me with a gift of 4000 Gifs! I had already entered around 2000 of those, but the other 2000 were an enormous help. Thank you, Antonio Carlos...what a blessing! The beta test version has around 6740 symbols, which gives us enough symbols to test different dictionary sorting routines. Later, when SignBank 2.0 is officially release, I hope to have at least 10,000 symbols in SymbolBank. While I am writing this message, our FileMaker programmer is on another computer in my office, bundling the Runtime version of the beta test version. There are 6 people who have agreed to do beta testing. I will send them the beta test version and ask them to give me feedback. Once I receive the feedback, we will make necessary changes. I hope the official SignBank 2.0 will be released in Spring, 2002. Meanwhile, people are waiting for their orders from me. I am happy to announce that SignWriting will now be used by two people in French-Canada, to record French Canadian Sign Language. I received a phone call from Quebec yesterday ;-) I hope to catch up with all my mail soon - Thanks everyone, for your patience... Happy weekend! -- Val ;-) Valerie Sutton ....visit the...
