Dear Valerie, dear members of the list,
I've met the team of Fribourg (Switzerland) yesterday to make them a
short presentation on SW, to see whether they would be interested in
taking part into a litteracy project with some (or all) of their deaf
kids. They discovered SW for the first time and need some time to think
about it. They also have many other project in the school so it might
take a while untill we start something together. Maybe next autumn but
they still have to think about it.
During the presentation.. there has been many very interesting questions
which I couldn't directly answer... ! I need your experience to give
them a feed-back about some points. One of the professionnal asked
whether there is a minimal age to introduce the SW system for the kids.
This question is very interesting as there might be some similarities
between hearing children acquiring written language and deaf children
aquiring SW. Hearing children need to have some metalinguistic skills to
be able to write and read. They need to make the links between what they
hear and what's down on the paper... and they need to have good language
skills prior to learning how to write (or read). Do any of you have
experience in that field. When do you introduce Sw to your deaf kids ?
What age do you start?
I'm looking forward to reading your different answer which I'll transmit
to the deaf school's team in Fribourg.
