Subject:  New SW History Video

Good Morning SignWriting List Members!
Yesterday I was in a TV studio all day, in a sound booth, doing the female
voices for a new video we have produced, which summarizes the history of
SignWriting in a "half-hour" program. All the male voices were voiced by
interpreter Pasch McCombs. I will now write an accompanying booklet to go
with the video and that is not ready yet. Hopefully the video and booklet
will be ready by the end of June :-)

The video is the second in a series of videos called "Deaf Perspectives on
SignWriting". Video One was shot in my living room in 1994 and contains the
opinions of four Deaf people, who at first were against SignWriting and
then later learned it and found it useful.

This second video is professionally shot in a studio and can be used on
television. I hope that we can place it on educational television networks
in the future. It's full title is: "Deaf Perspectives on SignWriting, Video
Two: The History of SignWriting's Development, 1974-1997" and it includes
"very ASL" discussions from Deaf people who worked with SignWriting during
that time period. The Deaf people featured are Butch Zein, Kevin Clark,
Lucinda O'Grady Batch, Denny Voreck, and guest appearances by Bernard Bragg
and Prince Abdul Aziz A. Al-Obaid, who is a Deaf Saudi Arabian. Aziz is
interested in bringing the video back to his country to encourage the
school system there.

As you know, we already have "History Chapters" on our SignWriting Web
Site, which you can read anytime:

SignWriting History Directory
https://www.SignWriting.org/sw140.html

Basically this new video is a summary of all of the history chapters,
explained in ASL from the Deaf participant's perspective. And, at the same
time, we tried to make it entertaining - which is a hard task when
presenting history!

I now plan to donate this video to the SignWriting Literacy Project
participants.

Speaking of which - I am a little behind - but now that I am back....I am
preparing the boxes for the Literacy Project teachers, who have been
waiting sooooooo long! They will be sent today!

Best -

Valerie Sutton :-)
