Hello Everyone!!

For those who have celebrated a holiday this month, I surely hope you had a
wonderful holiday! I have been thinking of all of you :-)

And the holiday is not over yet! The New Year is fast approaching...amazing
that 1998 is almost over...

This holiday I have been blessed with visiting family members from Florida.
Our Sutton clan is split in three groups -one in Florida, one in San Diego
and one in Ohio. And a bunch from Florida has been living with me in the
past ten days, and will leave on January 1st. My ten year old nephew,
Andrew, is a very bright child, and he was bored this holiday, so I decided
to place him on one of my Macintoshes. I know he has used a Mac before, but
I had no idea how skilled he already is at age ten!

And since I have a lot of publications half started, I thought
hmmmmm...what can I give Andrew to do, that could help us? So I showed him
some line-drawings (illustrations) of Sleeping Beauty, that are ready to go
for our new Sleeping Beauty book that will be written in American Sign
Language. The book is not finished yet. The illustrations need to be
colored in Photoshop. So I taught Andrew how to color them in Photoshop,
and he colored the illustrations by computer and then printed them on my
trusty ink jet color printer - and he is so proud! I then taught him how to
bind the book, and how to laminate the front cover - we have a future
publisher in Andrew!

Of course, the SignWriting has to be added - ha! So I can't say Sleeping
Beauty is ready for distribution. But at least the illustrations are
brightly colored from the perspective of a ten year old, and I am planning
to use them - why not? I will say on the book that the illustrations are by
Ida Candelaria, colored by Andrew Nichols Sutton!

Tomorrow a teacher from Albuquerque, New Mexico, who will be directing a
new SignWriting Literacy Project in 1999 in the Albuquerque, New Mexico
school system, is coming to study with me and Darline Clark Gunsauls for
three days. Then, both family members and student are leaving New Years Day.

On January 4th, I hope to post a new Lesson Online on our SignWritingSite.
It will be the new arrows lesson, teaching the arrows that are more
advanced, on the diagonal planes. Plus, our site has been awarded its
seventh award, this time for our work with deafness, so I will be posting
the award on January 4th too.

And then....yes, there is more...on January 9th I am having visitors from
Spain who are using and spreading SignWriting throughout Spain. They have
translated our textbook "Lessons In SignWriting" into Spanish and Spanish
Sign Language, plus they have changed the book and added some wonderful
illustrations and new sections that I think are great! They sent me a rough
draft of the book through air mail, so I can read it before they arrive,
and I am really thrilled!

And oh...I know you want to know about SignWriter 5.0...in all this chaos
this week I have been working on that too - and our programmer Larry
Peranich is a great help. Those details will be explained in a later
message...because right now I have to take one of my guests to the dentist!!

So...just wanted to tell you I am alive! I want to wish you all a wonderful
New Year, and I will write more just as soon as possible!

Much love -

Valerie :-)
