Dear Carlos, You are right - Maltese is a Semitic language that had developed independently of Arabic. It has been influenced by various Mediterranean languages, particularly French and more extensively, Italian and English. It is written in Roman Script unlike Arabic. However, we have only very recently started studying Maltese Sign Language ....The words constituting the name for it in Maltese are of Italian origin...
