Dear SW List Members: I had a delightful visit with my special guest from Brazil, Ronice M. Quadros. I was so happy to meet Ronice, who is a very sweet and special person :-) Besides visiting Salk Institute, and meeting some of my Deaf friends and colleagues, Ronice and I worked on preparing materials for the SignWriting Literacy Project in Brazil. Because of our meeting together, we now have... 1. A "History of SignWriting" written in Brazilian Portuguese by Ronice. This was already written before Ronice arrived here, but I was so impressed with it...We are planning to post it on our web site :-) 2. Two booklets, "Introduction to SignWriting" and "SignWriting Basics", which accompany the Lessons In SignWriting Video Series, will now be available in Brazilian Portuguese. Ronice did the entire translation while she was here - quite an accomplishment! 3. A New Fingerspelling Keyboard for Brazil. When I watched Ronice fingerspell, I realized that the original keyboard design was not good enough ...so I re-designed it with Ronice's input and advice. I went into the software and re-did each key, until Ronice felt that it truly fit with the way people fingerspell in Brazil. That is the next topic for me to share with you - namely - how I developed the 14 fingerspelling keyboards that we have at present, in the SignWriter Computer Program. This subject should be of interest, not only because it discusses some of the issues of typing standardizations, but also because it discusses left-handed fingerspelling!! Have a great Sunday :-) Valerie Sutton :-) https://www.SignWriting.org Sutton at the DAC Deaf Action Committee For SignWriting Box 517, La Jolla, CA, 92038-0517, USA (619)456-0098 voice (619)456-0010 tty (619)456-0020 fax |
