SignWriting List
February 26, 2001

Dear SW List!
Michael Everson, the designer of our Sutton Fingerspelling Fonts in
True Type, has also been working on establishing language codes for
different signed languages.

For example, you know how people place in their email
headers..."Languages accepted: EN, DE

Those codes mean English and German....so EN means "English", and so forth....

Such codes are needed for signed languages too, now that Brazil is
working on a chat room in SignWriting...we need to be able to say
which Sign Language we are writing in!! (Isn't that wonderful? ;-)

So....

Angus just posted the following message on SLLING...Thanks for
informing us, Angus. It appears that these language codes have been
approved....or I believe that is the case, judging by the message
that is posted below....

sgn....means "Sign Language" in general (that was established last year)

the new ones are...

sgn-US....means the native Sign Language of the US (or American Sign Language)
sgn-IE....means the native Sign Language of Ireland (or Irish Sign Language)
sgn-NI.....Nicaraguan Sign Language
sgn-GB.....British Sign Language (BSL)

Many thanks for the information, Angus!

Val ;-)
