For the discussion, using your chart 6 across and 8 down, the SSS variant I am using labels these 48 positions with 01 - right index finger palm toward reader, pointing up, considered 0 degrees 02 - right index finger palm toward reader, pointing 45 degrees counterclockwise 03 - right index finger palm toward reader, pointing 90 degrees counteclockwise 04 - right index finger palm toward reader, pointing 135 degrees counterclockwise 05 - right index finger palm toward reader, pointing 180 degrees counterclockwise 06 - right index finger palm toward reader, pointing 225 degrees counterclockwise 07 - right index finger palm toward reader, pointing 270 degrees counterclockwise 08 - right index finger palm toward reader, pointing 315 degrees counterclockwise 09 - right index finger palm facing left, pointing up, considered 0 degrees 10 - right index finger palm facing left, pointing 45 degrees counterclockwise .... 17 - right index finger palm away from reader, pointing up, considered 0 degrees 18 - right index finger palm away from reader, pointing up, 45 degrees counterclockwise .... 25 - right index finger palm toward reader, hand extending outward, considered 0 degrees 26 - right index finger palm toward reader, hand extending outward, 45 degrees counterclockwise .... 33 - right index finger palm facing left, hand extending outward, considered 0 degrees .... 41 - right index finger palm away from reader, hand extended outward, considered 0 degrees .... 48 - right index finger palm away from reader, hand extended outward, 315 degrees counterclockwise. This presumes a cataloguing system based on right-hand dominant, or actually, right hand facing the reader on another person's hands. Since the writing system was originally created looking at another person's hands, this system makes sense from that history, as the system would be read "left to right" but "left" would be the other person's "right" hand, however, looking at a sign on the page, as currently published, the most logical 01 position for the current writing system always reading left to right would be the left hand facing the reader as position 01. Currently, the SSS system will be (for the left hand), if I am following the SSS logic. 49 (logically) is left index finger palm facing the reader, pointing up, considered 0 degrees 50 is left index finger palm facing the reader, 45 degrees CLOCKWISE (toward the center line) 51 is left index finger palm facing the reader, 90 degrees clockwise (toward the center line) 52 is left index finger palm facing the reader, 135 degrees clockwise (toward the center line) 53 is left index finger palm facing the reader, 180 degrees clockwise 54 is left index finger palm facing the reader, 225 degrees clockwise 55 is left index finger palm facing the reader, 270 degrees clockwise 56 is left index finger palm facing the reader, 315 degrees clockwise .... 96 is left index finger palm away from the reader, pointing outward, 315 degrees clockwise. (This was the first decision the SignNet dictionary project had to make. All signs were changed to "right-hand dominant" for ease of cataloguing) and hand position 01 is the right hand facing the reader pointing upward.) ----- Original Message ----- From: Valerie Sutton To: Sent: Friday, June 22, 2001 4:34 PM Subject: Re: Sign-Symbol-Sequence (SSS) > SignWriting List > June 22, 2001 > > The first handshape is the Index Hand with a tight, closed fist. > > This one handshape has 48 possible positions....6 palm facings across > and 8 rotations down: | ||||||||||||
