SignWriting List June 19, 2001 Dear SignWriting List: Before teaching the Sequence, I should explain the terminology I will be using...(I know linguists and others have a different terminology in some cases and that is fine! ;-) ....SIGNWRITING TERMINOLOGY... SIGN equivalent to a "WORD" in spoken languages...a written SIGN is a combination or unit of Sign-Symbols that convey a concept in signed languages. SIGN-SYMBOL equivalent to a "LETTER" in western spoken languages...a written Sign is composed of Sign-Symbols, just as words are composed of letters from the Roman or Greek or Arabic alphabets.... SIGN-SYMBOL-SEQUENCE (SSS) equivalent to "ALPHABETICAL ORDER" in western spoken languages...the Sign-Symbols are placed in a specific sequence that is used to sort Sign Language dictionaries. SSS-1999...or...SW-SSS The "SIGNWRITING-SSS" is the Sequence used for sorting signs in SignWriting. It is a specialized list of symbols just for signed languages. It was updated in 1999. ....MOVEMENT-WRITING TERMINOLOGY... SUTTON-SYMBOL The Sutton Movement Writing system is composed of SUTTON-SYMBOLS. Only some of those symbols are used in SignWriting. SUTTON-SYMBOL-SEQUENCE (SSS) also called the "Sutton SymbolBank" (SSB). It is a listing of every symbol in Sutton Movement Writing. SSS-2002...or...MW-SSS The "MOVEMENT-WRITING-SSS" is a generic list of ALL symbols, but they are placed in a specific sequence too...Mime artists, dancers, sports enthusiasts and others can sequence their writing in books and computer programs with the MW-SSS. -- Val ;-> ----------------------------- Valerie Sutton SignWritingSite: https://www.SignWriting.org SignWriting List Archives: https://groups.yahoo.com/group/sw-l/ To post a message to the SW List: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
