SignWriting List July 27, 2001 Hello Angus - Thank you for this question. It highlights the very reason why I am changing over to new terminology. Words are not as good as diagrams. I am trying to develop some better diagrams and will get back to you on this. The symbols work, but they are not "any" knuckle joint movement. They represent a "specific kind" of knuckle joint movement...which can be defined with rules. Oddly enough, the rules were always hidden there, but it was my inability to explain my own thinking in words, that was the hindrance. In the old days, when I taught personally, I would show an action, and then write it, in silence. That would solve any problem of semantics - ha! So...to try to answer your question in words... If the Squeeze motion requires a little knuckle joint action...that is OK! If we take away the term Knuckle Joint completely, such a question will never come up. A Squeeze motion has nothing to do with a Hinge Motion. They are two different kinds of motion. Hinge Motion: Finger motion from the knuckle joint, while the other joints are LOCKED and do not change. Like a door swinging back and forth on its hinges...the locked unit of fingers swing up and down, opening and closing. I will show you with diagrams later... Squeeze Motion: The feeling of "squeeze", like milking a cow. Moving from open fingers, to tightly closed fingers. It can also be a single finger, moving from open to tightly bent. Squeeze motion requires a bend from the middle joints and sometimes the end joints of the fingers. Sometimes a Squeeze Motion can involve the knuckle joints too...(that is the necessary result of the squeezing motion)....but it must not be confused with Hinge Motion. >- The "hinge" motion uses just the "first" joints - the ones that connect >the fingers to the palm of the hand. Yes. That is correct. >- The "squeeze" motion uses all three of the finger joints. Sometimes. It uses 3 joints when you go from a straight five down to a fist. But if you are signing the sign for "huh? in ASL, that squeezing motion only uses the middle and end joints of the finger, not the knuckle. So it depends on how deep the squeeze, as to whether the knuckle joints are involved or not...so let's just forget the term knuckle joint. There is a feeling to "squeezing"...hopefully I will find good ways to explain it without the term knuckle joint. > Is this right? I think there are some signs that use just the >second and third joints - would they be hinge or squeeze motion? They would be a Squeeze, since Hinge locks the middle and end joints of the fingers. Diagrams are coming when I can catch my breath from all my email! -- Val ;-> ----------------------------- Valerie Sutton SignWritingSite: https://www.SignWriting.org SignWriting List Archives: https://groups.yahoo.com/group/sw-l/ To post a message to the SW List: | ||||||||||||
