In making GIF's and JPG's I use Corel Photo House 2 in Windows 98 SE. It's an easy program for me. I can crop and enhance pictures and also change the basic properties of a picture. I can save in different formats. Two things I have noticed about working with picture files: 1. If I am saving as a GIF file, I find it best to change the picture to using only a black and white color palette first then saving with no transparency. Corel Photo House will not let me save the file as GIF until I change the properties of the file to NOT use a color palette greater than 256 colors (or grayscale). 2. Saving as a JPG (JPEG) file, I cannot save the file using the black and white color palette. I need to change the properties to be at least 256 colors (or grayscale). For black and white pictures, it doesn't matter if I use the 256 color or the 256 greyscale palette. I set the compression to the best value. You can set compression to about 2/3's compressed and still get decent quality pictures, but I don't think signwriting files will be too large in size when setting them at the best quality compression. As an example, I did a screen capture of the first three liines of Nancy's ABC story, reversed the colors to get it black on white background then saved as GIF and JPG. Both files are attached.
