Subject:  A general ASL question

This is more of a general ASL question not specifically
pertaining to Sign Writing. I have had a bit of a challenge
teaching my kids ASL. I will teach them a sign a particular
way and then we will watch a video and they will see a
different sign for the same word. I hadn't really realized
until now how many words have different signs until now!
For example, there are two ways to sign the word "who"
(maybe more, who knows!), two ways to sign the word doctor,
home, deaf, sister etc.

Should I just teach them one way and let them learn the
other ways as they encounter them or should I teach them all
the different ways to sign a particular word at one time?
