Hello Caroline and Carlos and Everyone on the SignWriting List!
First, I want to thank Caroline Readman for her wonderful ideas and I
appreciate all the offers of help :-)
When Caroline wrote to me and asked to do puzzles in SignWriting I thought
that was a terrific idea! Originally I assumed the puzzles would be placed
on other web sites that already have puzzles that are not in SignWriting,
but then Caroline and I started talking about a separate web site for those
SW puzzles, which then brought us to the need to develop a new name for the
SW puzzle web site. It was sort of like a snowball...one idea led to the
next idea...very fast indeed!
Generally I believe that SignWriting should be free to use, and that people
should be encouraged to place SignWriting on other web sites. A writing
system has to spread, and the web is a great place to do it!
And yes, you are right, Caroline, it is important that the name of a new
site does not confuse people, since our SignWriting Web Site is the central
source for information on the invention of SignWriting. And the majority of
our literature on the SignWriting Web Site is written in American Sign
Language, so another web site called "SignWriting USA!", which you
suggested in a previous message, I feel, will only confuse people.
I like your idea, Carlos, about the word "Club" as a part of the name of
another web site that uses SignWriting. Somehow a "Club" sounds like "fun",
and that differentiates it from the official SignWriting Web Site. So I
suggested some of these names to Caroline awhile back:
SignWriting ClubSite
SignWriting GameSite
SignWriting FunSite!
SignWriting PuzzleSite
Meanwhile, I have learned something from all of this...I have learned that
I need to develop a policy on how we handle the names of "sister sites"
that use SignWriting. That can be done. It is just a matter of thinking it
through carefully.
Originally Caroline and I discussed the possibility of placing the puzzles
on our official SignWriting Web Site, and we can do that too. I had
suggested "a sister site" to Caroline only because I am so busy, and I am
concerned that I am spreading myself too thin. On the other hand, we want
to do what is best for SignWriting, and your opinions are important to me.
I am writing to ask the SignWriting List...How do you all feel about having
another web site that uses SignWriting? Do you like the idea, or would you
prefer just one SignWriting Web Site? What is best for the writing system,
and for all of you?
Thanks for your input -
Valerie :-)
