Hi Dawn... risking Joes smack for being into linguistics instead of sign writing... The linguistic definition of the "5" hand shape has the fingers spread apart. The "B" handshape has the fingers closed together. The position of the thumb in some of the various signs is not as critical as all that distinction, which is why we call them "b" and not "5" hushing up now.
