Subject:  Administrivia & Thank You Paul :-)

9/16/98
Good Morning SignWriting List!
I want to thank everyone for your wonderful messages and all of your
interest and support. And most of all, I want to thank Paul Cowley, who
donated a wonderful gift to us a long time ago, but because I am only one
person (and yes - I have no team at the moment for a variety of reasons), I
literally did not have enough hours in the day to take advantage of Paul's
donation.

So both Paul and I know that I held back from telling you about this new
idea that Paul has donated, because I do not have the time to run it at
this moment. I know...you are probably wondering why I think I have to run
it...well perhaps I don't have to, but there is good reason for my concern.
Here are the facts.

1. Paul has set up a separate and different email list - a little like the
SignWriting List - but with one major difference. We would instruct members
how to set their email to be able to accept attachments.

2. Plus members of this new list could paste SignWriting as a graphic
inside an email message, and the others could read the SignWriting in email.

3. To join this list, you would have to be willing to type with SignWriter
4.3 for MS-DOS. You have no other choice, because we have no other program
to offer at this time.

4. To paste SignWriting inside an email message as a graphic, you will have
to type your message in MS-DOS, then copy it into a program like Photoshop
that can make GIF files, and then prepare the GIF file and paste it into
the email message. This is not easy if you are new to GIF files, but it
could be done if you are willing to go to the effort.

5. We do not have SignWriter 5.0 at this time. I shared with you the fact
that we were able to convert old files in SignWriter 5.0 last summer,
because I got the impression you wanted to know what the life of the
inventor is like. Let me tell you other facts about being an inventor....

I ran out of money in the middle of the summer. I paid all my bills, but
could not continue the work on SignWriter 5.0 because of lack of funds.
Plus, the programmers got horribly busy themselves, and the work stopped.
Now I am switching programmers and I am raising money and we will someday
have SignWriter 5.0 which I have worked so hard on - but it is not ready at
this time - and until I can raise the money I cannot tell you when it will
be ready. Do not plan on it in the near future. I must raise money now.

But you will survive! We have SignWriter 4.3...yeah ...I know people don't
want MS-DOS anymore, but if the children of Nicaragua can use it so can
North Americans!

And other people are welcome to develop their own software with the
SignWriting symbols. I have some great news about that, but I will tell you
about that later. I plan to post a very important message about other
people developing SignWriting software, but not today! So the work
continues no matter what.

In February, 1999, the Center For Sutton Movement Writing, which is the
non-profit organization I founded in 1974, which sponsors the DAC, will be
celebrating our 25th anniversary.

Now three last things...

1. Even if SignWriter 5.0 were ready tomorrow, it will not create GIF
files. No...you will have to prepare them the slow way like I do :-)

2. Please don't send attached files to this SignWriting List, since some
computers crash when you do this.

3. This SignWriting List will always continue as is. We can call the other
list another name, so we know the difference. I have no idea what name to
choose - perhaps "SW ShareFiles List", or the SW ShareList, or something
like that. Any suggestions?

So, if you want to start the new SW ShareList now, we can do this, but you
will have to become independent from me as much as possible.

Someday there will be a way to type directly in SignWriting on the web -
but that day is not here yet - and you will have to be patient.

So now, because of my heavy schedule, you may not hear from me for the rest
of the day. But I will definitely send the flashcards to whomever wants
them.

And I want to thank Paul Cowley once again for his donations of these two
lists -

I truly appreciate it, Paul :-)

All the best -

Valerie :-)
