SignWriting List
July 7, 2000

Dear avid rotation symbol writers! ;-)

Try this exercise....

First write a sign with straight arrows. Write the beginning hand
position of the sign. Now write all eight possible directions of
arrows around it. The beginning hand position is the CENTER, and
there are 8 possible directions of movement - up, up-diagonal, side,
down-diagonal and so forth.... or forward, forward-diagonal, side and
so forth...

Then erase the arrows you do not want, and you are left with the
proper placement of the arrow relating to the beginning hand
position, which is in the center of the movement.

It is the same with rotation symbols. Place the beginning handshape
in the center, and write rotation symbols going clockwise and
counter-clockwise around the beginning handshape. Then decide which
path you want to paint, and eliminate the others.
