Thank you, Denise, for your thoughtful message. There is research on
both reading and writing. You mentioned Cecelia Smith at Gallaudet
University...Cecelia's messages were excellent years ago, you are
right about that ;-)

There is also another Cecilia (different spelling)...Cecilia Flood,
who is working with Deaf children in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is
writing her dissertation at the University of New Mexico. Cecilia,
plus teachers Lorraine Crespin and Kate Dalton Lee, are using
SignWriting regularly with their Deaf pupils. Some pages to visit:

SignWriting Research Forum

Cecilia Flood's research description:
Assessing Deaf Children Learning SignWriting
in the Albuquerque Public Schools, New Mexico

Albuquerque Public Schools
SignWriting Literacy Project

There are also other SignWriting Literacy Projects that are reporting
success, for example:

SignWriting Teacher's Forum

also go to:

Who Uses SignWriting?...

Nicaraguan Schools using SignWriting

German School using SignWriting

Hope this helps!
