Title: Materialization of Deaf Literature – reflections on productions in sign writing

Abstract: This study deals with Deaf Literature materialized in the written form of Libras, through the SignWriting system. By making this connection between two areas, we seek to identify the main genres and types of literary works that have circulated in the Deaf Community through Libras written in SignWriting, linking us to Deaf Literature (Sutton-Spence, 2021). Thus, methodologically, this is a study with a qualitative approach (Minayo, 1994), which used a bibliographic survey (Lima; Mioto; Prá, 2007) and documentary research (Godoy, 1995) for its constitution. In this survey, our aim was to identify the literary works available to the Deaf Community, in different spaces, considering the theoretical discussion based on the bibliographic survey and the documentary analysis of the mapped works. Furthermore, we reflected on the genre of materialization of these works and, mainly, their classification in typological terms, based on Mourão (2011; 2016). As a result, we noticed the recurrence of works aimed at children and young people materialized in this system. As justification, we believe that the need for teaching materials for the bilingual and bicultural education of the Deaf has led to reality, since these are linguistically accessible productions in Libras, based on visuality, and that allow the contrastive analysis between Libras and written Portuguese. Furthermore, we verified that these works refer, for the most part, to proposals for translation and adaptation and, to a lesser extent, creations. These works involved genres such as children's stories, adapted fables, legends, comic books, and others. When we verified another part of the analyzed material, we also identified the production of poetry in the written modality of Libras, which are works aimed at the adult audience. In this case, we mapped works that are translations of concrete poetry (Barros, 2020; 2021), in addition to artistic creations made by Deaf people, which circulate, especially, in the digital space, such as the work SER (Evangelista, 2018) and the productions of Maurício Barreto. From this discussion, we can conclude that the SignWriting system has historically also been used for literary recording and, more recently, Deaf and hearing authors have used the iconicity and visuality of writing to propose highly creative and visual poems, through the manipulation of graphemes and symbols of this writing.
