ENGLISH

A phonological analysis for writing in SignWriting of the lexicon
CASA, through the SignPuddle platform: a case study.

Crisiane de Freitas Soares
Federal University of Pelotas

This dissertation aims to analyze the CASA sign in Brazilian Sign Language – Libras registered in SignPuddle. This platform resembles a collaborative sign bank, generating a dictionary and an encyclopedia that is fed by its users, leading to a reflection on the phonological variation that exists in this sign. It uses, as a basis, one of the parameters presented by Stokoe, in this case the handshape, from the CASA lexicon, in SignWriting. Therefore, the research is defined as bibliographical, of a qualitative nature and descriptive and explanatory approach, using the last fifteen years as a time frame for the collection of theoretical material. With this, I justify the elaboration of this dissertation because I consider it relevant that sign language presents a standardized writing for the purposes of teaching and learning deaf subjects, as well as for users of sign language, because as highlighted in the conclusions, this standardization is possible due to the quantitative recurrences using the same handshape (HC). Therefore, for the analysis, a survey of the CASA sign was carried out on the platform, reaching a total of 576 records. However, in order to meet the objectives proposed by the research, 371 signs were worked with, which presented three different hand configurations, being 42 to CM and 8 that 321 refer to CM to CM. With the quantity presented, it is understood that it is not possible to dissociate, orality from writing, since they coexist in history because each one plays a role in society. In conclusion, based on Bardin's (1977) assumptions, the inferences and interpretations, regarding the data collected, show us that, in fact, sign language allows some flexibility regarding the writing of the sign for HOUSE due to the fact that one of the rules present in the composition of the sign is the allophone, in which a small phonological change in the Finger Configuration, corresponding to the thumb of CM, used to produce the sign for HOUSE, shows that there is no harm to its meaning, and it can be produced with the three configurations by hand and and .
