ABSTRACT

James Shepard-Kegl touched so many lives. He was a brave pioneer. One of his pioneering efforts, which he dedicated much time to, was writing Nicaraguan Sign Language, and because of this, there are now libraries of written literature in Nicaraguan Sign Language. This was never done before in history. James has provided reading materials for Nicaraguan Deaf students for generations to come. A monumental legacy. Thank you, James! In this presentation we try to list some of the publications written in Nicaraguan Sign Language by James Shepard-Kegl.

James Shepard-Kegl tocó muchas vidas. Fue un valiente pionero. Uno de sus esfuerzos pioneros, al que dedicó mucho tiempo, fue escribir la lengua de señas nicaragüense, y gracias a ello ahora existen bibliotecas con literatura escrita en lengua de señas nicaragüense. James wrote Nicaraguan Sign Language using the SignWriter DOS Computer Program developed by Richard Gleaves, and later, when MS-DOS was not available any longer, James used the SignWriter JAVA Computer Program, which is a program available on the world-wide-web that is based on the original SignWriter DOS program developed by Richard Gleaves, but it was further developed by Richard Kadel of DTAI Software.

James Shepard-Kegl is one of the few in the world who used SignWriter Java to produce SignWriting literature. He would type the documents and print them onto paper and then cut the paper into pieces that would fit onto the pages of children's stories that were already published in hardbacked books published by big-name publishers. With permission from the publishers, James was able to paste the SignWriting next to the illustrations in the books to give the Nicaraguan Deaf students literature to read with illustrations. The SignWriting was written horizontally, from left to right. Then copies of these documents were placed in a spiral-bound book for reading in the Nicaraguan classroom.
